Concerts and shows

I devise concert-shows that combine music, storytelling and dramaturgy, as well as immersive formats designed for heritage sites or cultural events, in collaboration with stage directors and visual artists. In each of these projects, I seek to connect the works with the historical, political and social contexts in which they were born.

Talks and lectures

I give talks on subjects related to early music, its instruments and its repertoire. With Into the Winds, for example, I gave a presentation at the Sorbonne on the wind bands of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, emblematic ensembles that set the rhythm of ceremonial and festive life in princely courts and towns. I traced their history, their playing practices and the ways they were handed down, before turning to the very practical questions raised today by their reconstruction: choice of sources, instrument making, reeds and staples, the search for a historically informed sound.

Music teaching

I regularly give lessons and masterclasses on the shawm and other early double-reed instruments, for beginners as well as experienced musicians coming from modern instruments. They cover playing in a wind band, approaching the repertoire, accompanying dance, and making and adjusting reeds. Feel free to contact me to arrange a lesson or a masterclass!

Balls and dance workshops

I lead Renaissance balls that offer a playful and festive way to discover a little-known part of our heritage. In jeans and trainers or in historical costume, everyone can taste the joy of a pulse shared by a whole company of dancers.

I also offer workshops on Renaissance dances for secondary schools and conservatoires. In schools, they provide a lively way into the culture and arts of the period. In conservatoires, they focus on the relationship between music and dance and complement the usual training: playing for dancers requires you to internalise the tempo, to work on weight and energy, and to gauge the effect of your musical choices on the body. Young instrumentalists also explore historical practices (ornamentation, improvisation, playing from memory, oral transmission) in a different kind of stage experience, less frontal and freer than that of the traditional concert.

Research and instrument making

My interest in the oboe leads me to take part in research projects and to work with instrument makers on designing or reconstructing historical instruments.

I also carry out many experiments on so-called “historical” reeds: type of cane, gouging, inner and outer scraping. I am convinced that this research can open the way to a different sound and a different aesthetic, perhaps closer to the original conception of these instruments. I share some of it in the resources section of this site.
